Springer Media marks Wikimedia images as available for licensing; Springer
announces some changes in response. One way to read this is about confusion over Creative Commons licensing, but more important, I think, is the way people treat images--especially as components of larger works--as extra appendages, which then produces the mistakes about permissions (an issue discussed in the first article). It's a dynamic also seen in how the CCC treats photographs; Google Books proposed to avoid the problem by stripping out most images.
