Copyright question of the day, Colting edition

Frederik Colting and his partner have a new line of books, KinderGuides, which are children's versions of classics like On the Road and Breakfast at Tiffany's.  Fair use?

  1. Umm . . . no? Derivative work, uses all (or almost all) of the work, competes with original to some degree, part of for-profit commercial enterprise. If not licensed I'd say they have problems. Although it's a "guide," the description at least implies that it contains the entire plot and can be read as a story.
